Stieren Theatre
San Antonio, Texas

In 1968 Paul Baker, the chairman of the Speech and Drama Department at Trinity University, opened the Ruth Taylor Theater complex. While this theater served the university for many years, in 1998 a major renovation was planned and funded.

The purpose of the renovation was to increase the seating capacity of the main theater to 500 seats. This plan included the addition of a balcony, expansion of the scenic shop, and new classroom space. As important to the faculty and staff was upgrading the stage rigging system and replacing the stage lighting and sound systems.

The principal scope of WJHW's work was acoustical consulting, mechanical noise isolation, theatre consulting, and technical system design including stage lighting, rigging, and theater sound systems. This included: audience sight lines studies; design of a new, acoustically reflective ceiling; and a front of house catwalk system. Acoustically Jim Johnson, of WJHW, provided guidance on room finishes, space shaping, and material usage in the performance spaces.
